The Association of Settlement Companies Announces Legislative Efforts

Fair legislation will help eliminate the bad apples from the industry while addressing the concerns of critics and regulators
At the same time, we want to continue helping consumers struggling with their debt to get back on their financial feet.

Madison, WI (PRWEB) May 23, 2009 -- The Association of Settlement Companies (TASC), the non-profit watchdog organization for self-regulating the debt-settlement industry, today announced its efforts on both a state and national level to have legislation passed that regulates debt settlement companies.

TASC has been working actively with legislatures and regulators to get fair legislation passed to encourage responsible conduct among debt settlement companies and to ensure debt settlement remains a positive, viable debt relief solution for consumers seeking an alternative to bankruptcy.

"Fair legislation will help eliminate the bad apples from the industry while addressing the concerns of critics and regulators," Chris Kesterson, President of TASC, said. "At the same time, we want to continue helping consumers struggling with their debt to get back on their financial feet."

Examples of bills on which TASC is working include the Debt Management Services Act in California (Assembly Bill 350) and New York (Assembly Bill 7268) and the Uniform Debt Management Act in Texas (Senate Bill 2233), Tennessee (House Bill 1278) and Nevada (Senate Bill 355).

TASC has lobbying teams throughout the country, as well as a federal lobbyist in Washington D.C.
